THE NORTH SEA, LATE OCTOBER
The Ekofisk field lies 320 kilometres off Norway, discovered in 1969. By 1975 its platforms burned gas flares day and night above cold grey water. A Force 10 gale is common there in autumn.
No bridge of causes leads to the timeline recorded here. The atlas files it among the fables, where the question is not how but what then. A storm out of the year 875 lifts six longships of the Hordaland jarl Thorolf and sets them down, wet and whole, beneath the Ekofisk B platform in 1975. The flares roar overhead like a slaughtered sun. Thorolf grips his axe. He does not know the word for steel this large.
