No bridge of causes leads to the timeline recorded here. The atlas files it among the fables, where the question is not how but what then. Rain had drowned the fields near Mont-Saint-Jean all night. Napoleon waited for the ground to dry before firing. Here, on the crest above Hougoumont, a single iron colossus wades the mud on his order. Its cannon-arms trail smoke. It stands four times a grenadier's height, and it does not sink. A brass barometer swings on its breastplate, needle falling.
