The Armada rode north off Gravelines, 130 ships, some 26,000 men. Fireships had scattered them at Calais the night before. Medina Sidonia held formation in a rising southwest wind. Howard and Drake pressed from windward. Powder ran short on both sides; the Channel chop stood grey and cold.
No bridge of causes leads to the timeline recorded here. The atlas files it among the fables, where the question is not how but what then. Out of a rain squall between the fleets slides a hull of grey steel. It is 150 metres long. On its mast a small lamp begins to blink.
