Edward Teach, called Blackbeard, ran the sloop Adventure in the shoals off Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina. He wore slow-burning fuses in his beard and flew no black flag that dawn. Lieutenant Robert Maynard of HMS Pearl was hunting him with two hired sloops. Teach had perhaps nineteen men aboard, some drunk on the night's rum. The morning fog off the Outer Banks was thick and cold.
