The Roman fleet safe at anchor in Cartagena harbor by torchlight, AD 460

Rome never falls

Cartagena, AD 460. Three hundred Roman warships lie at anchor, built to take Africa back from the Vandals and save the West. In our timeline, traitors let the Vandals burn that fleet, and within sixteen years there was no Western Rome to save. This is the timeline where the traitors were caught the night before.

The Western Empire is dying of a simple wound: it lost Africa, and Africa was the money. The emperor Majorian, the last great soldier to wear the purple in the West, has spent two years building three hundred ships at Cartagena to take it back from the Vandals. In our timeline, paid men let the Vandal fleet in among them, and the armada burned at its moorings. In the timeline recorded here, the traitors were arrested the night before, and at dawn the fleet was still there.
